A win and luck for final place

FOUR into two just doesn't go.

With one regular season round remaining, the sixth-placed Queensland Firebirds are one of four teams chasing the last two spots in the ANZ Trans Tasman competition finals.

Not only will the team have to beat third-placed Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic by at least 21 goals in New Zealand on Monday night, the Firebirds will also need fourth-placed Adelaide Thunderbirds and fifth-placed New South Wales Swifts to lose to steal a place in the finals.

Adelaide hosts the last-placed Tactix at home while the Swifts are away to second-placed Northern Mystics in Auckland on Sunday.

Speaking from a clinic in Toowoomba yesterday, goal-keeper Laura Geitz conceded relying on other results to clinch a top-four spot was less than ideal.

"Had we have won even one more game we could have been sitting second or third on the ladder. It just goes to show how close the competition is this year," Geitz said. "It's one of things where when you have to rely on other teams to win and lose for you it never works out the way you want it to.

"It's a disappointing season for us, we are disappointed with how we've gone."
