Wests loom as a danger
HAVING the other A-grade sides wary of Wests this season sits comfortably with coach Kel Iszlaub.
With just weeks until the Ipswich finals, Iszlaub knows his men's side can't finish any higher than fourth.
"There's no pressure on us,'' the experienced coach and umpire said.
"It's the other teams that are fighting for those top two spots.
"Coming into the last round, they can only keep improving.''
That was highlighted in the Magpies' latest 4-4 draw against regular grand finalists Norths.
Wests came from 2-0 down to level the scores in the second half against a Devils outfit including representative players Tobias Figura and Aaron O'Beirne.
"Norths was a good measure for us,'' Iszlaub said.
"That was a real good game.
"We're working towards the finals. That's all we can do now.
"If we can get a bit of momentum going into this last round, they (Hancocks, Norths and Easts) might be looking over their shoulder.''
Iszlaub is happy with the on-field leadership being shown by his side. That includes Blair Iszlaub and Michael Wiseman at the back, Todd Watson in the midfield and team captain Greg Walker up front.
Watson scored for Wests on Friday night, joined by Aaron Gotting, Corey Jaenke and Tekoda Andrew-Sharrad.
Norths' goals came from O'Beirne, Figura, Anthony Woodward and Dean Jeffrey.
The coach was pleased with his team's spirited comeback.
"It was a big effort,'' he said.
"We're still swapping and changing but that's more or less the same sort of squad all through the year.
"Now it's just a matter of getting it right.''
In the other A-grade men's match at the weekend, Hancock Brothers crushed Easts 8-1.
Adam McClelland scored four goals.
With finals on the horizon, Iszlaub said an incentive for players was securing a spot in the team.
Coaches have to soon name their 11 A-grade players for the final series.
"They are fighting for their positions and they are standing up at the moment,'' Iszlaub said.
In the latest A-grade women's games, Swifts/Thistles defeated Bellbowrie 1-0 and Wests beat Norths 2-1.
