Watch Them Grow event boosts Salvation Army

IT MAY have been the windiest day of the year, but that did not stop more than 1000 visiting the Salvation Army's Watch Them Grow nursery open day on Saturday.

Jeanette Parsons, horticulturist in charge of the nursery, said despite the blustery conditions people were enjoying themselves at the open day.

"I have seen plenty of plants leaving, the feedback from all the visitors is good,” Mrs Parsons said.

She said the nursery was a "hidden gem”, with many visitors saying they did not know about it until they read about it in the Queensland Times.

"No specific plant has been popular, but people love anything with flowers,” she said.

Mrs Parson said the volunteers on the day was "wonderful”, including many from the nursery's Work for the Dole program.

"There have been guys making up extra cartons from scrap cardboard, we have had wheelbarrows to take plants out to people's cars, it has just been a wonderful day for us,” she said.
