Volunteers turn out for Clean Up Australia Day

ARMED with gloves, empty bags and plenty of spirit, dozens of volunteers helped clear Ipswich's parks of litter to mark the 25th annual national Clean Up Australia Day.

Volunteers took to Denmark Hill Conservation Estate and Goupong Park in two council-planned events yesterday.

It was the first time volunteering for six-year-old Lola O'Brien and the third year in a row for friend Addi O'Connell, also six.

The girls and their mums joined the group cleaning up Denmark Hill yesterday.

Lola's mum Dianne O'Brien said the family always tried to get involved with the community, particularly on environmental issues.

Volunteer Kylie O'Connell, mum to Addi, has taken the family to Clean Up Australia Day events at Brassall and Fernvale for several years.

The volunteers were treated to a free thank-you sausage sizzle after the clean-up.
