'Tragic accident': Man dies in water truck crash at Eton

UPDATE 10.30AM: A MAN has died in a single vehicle truck rollover on the Peak Downs Highway, marking the first road fatality in the Mackay region in 2018.

Just before 7am this morning, police from Marian and Eton were called to the crash, near the intersection of Andrews Rd and the Peak Downs Hwy. 

Paramedics and crews from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service responded, but tragically the 61-year-old male driver of the vehicle and only occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the man was heading west on the Peak Downs Highway when the accident occurred. 

Mackay Police Acting City Inspector Adrian Rieck said officers from the Pioneer Valley and Forensic Crash Unit were piecing together what occurred.

"At this stage, we don't believe there were any suspicious issues or any overbearing traffic offences that have been committed," he said.

"It appears at this stage to have been a tragic accident."

"Unfortunately, it's very tragic circumstances. Our thoughts are with the deceased male's family and relatives.

"It's just another tragic circumstance on our roads this Christmas/New Year period."

Forensic Crash Unit is on scene and are investigating. A report will be prepared for the coroner.


UPDATE 9AM: FORENSIC crash crews are on the scene of a serious crash on the Peak Downs Highway at Eton. 

A Queensland Police spokesman said initial indications were that a water truck blew a tyre before leaving the road and rolling into a ditch. 

He said police held concerns for the male driver of the vehicle.

UPDATE 7.30AM: QUEENSLAND Police have confirmed the vehicle involved in a crash at Eton is a water truck.

A QPS spokesman said the truck rolled on the Peak Downs Highway about 5km from the Eton Range.

It is understood the driver of the truck has been seriously injured.

UPDATE 7.15AM: THREE Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews are responding to a reported truck crash west of Mackay.

A QFES spokesman said two crews, including a rescue crew, and a back up appliance were en route to the accident at Eton.

He said the accident had occurred near the accident of the Peak Downs Highway and Elvins Road. It is understood the truck is the only vehicle involved.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said the truck rolled about 6.50am and ambulance crews were on scene.

BREAKING 6.55AM: EMERGENCY services are racing to Eton Range following reports of a serious crash.

Initial information suggests the accident has occurred on the Peak Downs Highway.

The driver of the vehicle is reportedly badly injured. It is unknown how many occupants were in the vehicle at the time.

Queensland Ambulance, Queensland Police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are all rushing to the scene.
