Undercover cops lure couple into ice deal

THREE undercover cops walked into a bar to buy some drugs.

Furnishing their request landed former couple Shannyn Lee Rushton, 31, and Joshua Benjamin Thompson, 27, in Maroochydore District Court on Monday.

They pleaded guilty to supplying ice to the officers who found them at The Pub in Mooloolaba on December 9, 2015.

Legal officer Ellen Howard said the undercover officers had asked if they could buy half a gram of ice after sparking up a conversation.

Ms Howard said Rushton and Thompson took their money, leaving a phone and a bankcard and collateral, before returning to hand them a small amount of the drug.

Rushton's defence barrister, Stephen Courtney, said his client was in the grips of an ice addiction at the time and saw it as a quick way to make $50.

Mr Courtney said Rushton had the drugs with her the whole time and her leaving was a ruse to ensure the customers didn't know that.

The court also heard Rushton was currently pregnant with a due date in December.

She had been in jail on remand since being arrested on other charges in May.

Defence barrister James Benjamin, for Thompson, tendered references from his client's father and uncle as well as psychologists reports.

Mr Benjamin said his client had been a heroin user since he was 18.

He said Thompson was undergoing treatment and had moved in with his parents to help facilitate change.

Judge John Robertson told Rushton and Thompson beating their drug addictions would be difficult.

He sentenced Rushton to 12 months in prison and Thompson to nine months in prison.

They were both given immediate parole.
