Qld Raceway place to be after exciting drag racing finales

THE final round at Willowbank Raceway's Queensland Drag Racing Championships did not disappoint last weekend.

Ipswich-based racers Tammy Goldthorpe and Tony Whyatt took out the Modified Bike and Powercruise Super Sedan titles respectively, with Raceview 'postie' Tammy needing to win the event to take the championship.

There were plenty of other great stories on the night too. For instance, did you know that Super Street champion and event winner Lucas Holz had to beat his own wife to take out his championship, or that Kellie Kidd had to watch on as her dad raced her title rival in the Modified bracket? If he had lost, Kidd would have lost her grip on the title.

How is that for nail-biting?

Congrats must also go to six-time Street Sedan champion Josh Fletcher (QDRC Outlaws), Kidd's brother Tony Bellert (QDRC SuperComp), Tim Barron (Junior Dragster) and David Gauldie (Super Gas - who took the win by just one point) on their championship victories.

Adam Solomon (Super Sedan), Dale O'Dwyer (Super Gas) and Stephen Gouws Modified) deserve praise for their event wins.

Saturday night was also the place for Roll Racing at Queensland Raceway.

They had a new format which I must say kicked a goal.

It was adding an eliminator round at the end of the night to see who had the fastest car on the night.

It seemed to flow really well, with the action just rolling through race after race which I personally love, with lots of starts and finishes.

The only downside for me is that the next one is not until January 30.

This weekend kicks off tonight with Friday Night Drift at Queensland Raceway.

Friday Night Drifts are always a great night out to walk around the pits and also watch some drifting action.

The atmosphere during the event is unreal and something that everyone needs to experience.

Tomorrow, I will get my motorcycle fix and have a look at the QR Moto Ride Day again at Queensland Raceway, then I will head over to the Willowbank Raceway Test and Tune night.

You never know what you will see at one of these nights with such a diverse range of vehicles.

Next door at the Ipswich Kart Club they will be holding the final round of their IKC Club Championship, so I will be sure to head over and take in some great karting action as well.

On Sunday I will be heading back to Queensland Raceway for the Ipswich Street Sprints.

It's the final round of the year and the street sprints are the easiest way to kick off your motorsport endeavours.

If your car is road registered, then you pretty much can hit the track and start putting out lap times.

Eligible cars are divided into four categories: four cylinder, six cylinder, eight cylinder, All Wheel Drive (AWD).

Turbo-charged and or/supercharged air induction vehicles move up by one category (except AWD).

Just about everything is catered for and you are competing against cars of similar capacity.

You never know, you just might see the Jonny 'Speed' Machine in action on the day.
