Swifts eye minor premiership as Vixens fall short

NEEDING a win in the final regular-season match to wrap up top spot and home court advantage for the major semi-final, the Melbourne Vixens were stunned by the sixth-placed Southern Steel in Invercargill, beaten 65-64.

The Vixens trailed by five goals at the final change before levelling the scores with 20 seconds left, only to see the home side snatch the win in the dying seconds.

The result turned the top four on its head, with the NSW Swifts only needing to beat the seventh-placed Northern Mystics in

Auckland last night to claim the minor premiership.

A Swifts' loss would give the Queensland Firebirds (3rd) a shot at snatching second place and the double chance against WBOP Magic (4th) in Hamilton tonight.

A win to the Swifts and loss to the Firebirds (captain Laura Geitz pictured) would see the Queenslanders forced to return to New Zealand on the weekend for an elimination final against the Magic.
