Some states not signing up to the NPSI

LABOR wants to establish an Australian School Performance Institute that would collect better data about school performance to improve results.

The initiative is contained in the Federal Government's National Plan for School Improvement, which is being negotiated with education authorities.

But School Education Minister Peter Garrett is having problems getting the states to sign up to the NPSI, as he revealed on Monday.

Just three of the eight states and territories have agreed to endorse the plan, which will be discussed at next week's Council of Australian Governments meeting in Canberra.

Data collected by the school performance unit would include information on student results, school and system performance and teachers.

This information would then be assessed to determine why certain schools are performing better than others.

Successful programs and policies could then be shared with every school in Australia through a new online portal, Mr Garrett said.
