Springfield soar into a grand final double
RUGBY UNION: Springfield have eliminated Pine Rivers to stay in the hunt for a third straight Barber Cup premiership.
Facing up against the Pine Rivers Boars in both the Barber and Pegg Cup preliminary finals on Saturday, the Hawks secured twin victories to put themselves in the box seat for this weekend's grand final at Ballymore Stadium.
"It was an awesome day to be a Hawk,” Springfield Barber Cup coach Jeremy Clark said. "We put ourselves in front in the Barber Cup and held on (36-22), but the Pegg Cup could have gone either way.
"The ruck is a lottery with Pine Rivers because there's so much contact, but the boys defended their line really well and held on for a 24-20 win.”
In the second preliminary final, Caboolture made easy work of Redlands with a comfortable 34-7 victory.
The win means Springfield and Caboolture will face off for just the second time this year, after the Snakes dispatched both Hawks outfits in the final regular round.
"It's going to be a tough one,” Clark said of the final. "It's great having everyone on board though and we'll aim for great training all week.
"You have to be careful of the contact but we are looking forward to regrouping and giving everything we have next week.”
In the Pegg Cup, Springfield are due to face Wynnum after the Bugs overcame Redlands 29-15 in their preliminary final clash.
Redlands had finished the season as minor premiers, but the title counted for little as the fourth-placed Wynnum produced an impressive upset to book their spot in the grand final.
With the best attacking record in the competition, Wynnum are sure to give Springfield a high-scoring finish to the year.
The Pegg Cup grand final between Springfield and Wynnum will kick off from 1.30pm on Saturday, followed by the Barber Cup grand final between Springfield and Caboolture from 3.30pm.
