Spirit's rising for football derby duel

EXPERIENCED Western Spirit goalkeeper Chris Morrall can't wait for the first local derby of the new season after his team's latest victory.

Beating Oxley United 3-1 on Saturday lifted Spirit to two wins from three games as they prepare to tackle cross-town rivals Ipswich City on Saturday night.

The Bulls also have two wins and a loss from their first three Capital League 2 games after going down 4-3 to Brisbane Force on Friday night.

"Against any Ipswich team is always a big match,'' Morrall said, having played in "seven or eight years'' of derby matches.

"You always go out and throw your jumper on - you wear that badge of pride.

"It's always an honour to play for your team and your club every year.''

Spirit captain Mauricio Arena and striker Dylan Goodman scored fantastic goals with winger Curtis Walters also featuring in the Goodna-based club's latest win at Dunlop Park.

"The boys are coming along really well,'' Morrall said, having played in the first three matches.

"It wasn't the best field or best football either but we adapted to it and somehow made it work.''

That approach is needed against the tenacious Ipswich City side.

The Bulls host Saturday night's 6pm derby at Brassall having pushed CL2 promotion prospects Brisbane Force at CJ Greenfield Reserve.

Dane Grant and Jay Kitching added to their early season goal tallies, with Jay Johnson also finding the net.

Morrall said Spirit had achieved the first of its early season goals.

"We set out for five points over the first three games as a minimum,'' he said. "We've come out with six, which is a positive. Hopefully we're looking for another three next weekend.''
