Spirits high as Ipswich teams thump opponents
IF team attitude is a recipe for success, Western Spirit are well on their way to making the finals this season.
While it's still far too early to be pondering that possibility, the Goodna- based Capital League 2 side continued its impressive run against Pine Rivers United on Saturday night.
Four goals by Dylan Goodman and a double to captain Mauricio Arena helped Spirit secure a 9-1 victory at Kippen Park.
Most pleasing for assistant coach and goalkeeper Chris Morrall was how well the Spirit players backed up after beating the Ipswich City Bulls 2-0 in the local derby a week earlier.
"I don't think I've played with a bunch of boys that's been so happy in the game, on the field,'' Morrall said.
"There's really good morale down there so it's excellent to train with the boys and coach them.
"It's really delightful.''
Spirit's fourth win in five games keeps them in touch with the competition leaders.
The Bulls also completed an important win in the earlier game on Saturday afternoon.
After a disappointing effort in the local derby, the Bulls hit back strongly beating Oxley United 5-1.
"I'm really really pleased,'' coach Norbert Duga said. "We totally dominated from probably the first whistle.''
Adekoya opened the scoring in the second minute before Dane Grant added another double to his growing tally.
Norbert conceded his team played poorly against Spirit.
"This was a different game,'' he said, having to handle the hot conditions on a pitch not conducive to good football.
"But we dominated the game and we deserved everything we got.
"I said to the boys midweek if we can get three points now, we're back in it.''
