UPDATE: Members of the SES are helping to search a Maryborough property where bodily remains and a human skull have been found.

Police said a woman who lived on the Bruce Hwy property discovered the bones about dusk on Thursday.

Police Detective Inspector David Briese said the police scientific unit were carrying out investigations at the site.

"Last night the female resident was doing some dirt clearing and came across some remains," he said.

Det Insp Briese said a number of bones had been found at the scene and the search process was continuing.

He said the discovery had not prompted public safety concerns.

Police are yet to identify the remains and the investigation is ongoing.

EARLIER UPDATE: The skull found on a property north of Maryborough was discovered by owners checking on the work of a contractor.

Maryborough police Sergeant Warwick Guan said the owners found the skull at 6pm on Thursday and phoned police to report it.

"They had work done on the property fence line and went to check on the man's work when they located the skull," Sgt Guan said.

"Due to the work done by the contractor, he has unearthed the skull.

"Nothing else has been reported found and Maryborough police have been guarding the scene for the scenes of crime officers to investigate."

Sgt Guan said investigations were continuing.

EARLIER: Police are investigating what is believed to be a human skull found on a property on the Bruce Hwy, north of Maryborough.

The remains were found late on Thursday, police said.

Forensic officers will attend the scene on Friday to determine the nature of the remains.
