Shea-led comeback falls short

BEN Shea is used to scoring tries at BMD Kougari Oval, albeit in different colours.

And the Ipswich Jets prop had two more to his name yesterday afternoon, as he led a second half fightback which fell agonisingly short.

The Jets were never able to overcome a slow start, eventually falling to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 30-24.

Shea admitted there were more nerves than usual when he turned up to his old stomping ground for the first time in 12 months.

"I was a bit more nervous than I anticipated. I had a few butterflies,” he said.

"But the boys knew that, and the coaches knew that. They helped settle me down and I got back into my routine.”

The Jets were again left to rue a slow start, as Wynnum went into the sheds up 24-2 after Conlon opened the scoring with a penalty conversion.

"It was the start again, we gave them too much of a start,” Shea said.

"A couple of errors and then back-to-back penalties which they capitalised on.”

Shea crossed immediately after the break to breathe life into a Jets comeback, and scored his second with seven minutes to play to bring the visitors within a converted try.

"One more would have been handy, but it wasn't to be,” Shea said.

"We nearly got there in the end.

"It wasn't a lack of effort that we got behind, it was just those few small errors and the penalties.”

Shea said the second half fightback was promising, that it showed the Jets are more than capable, but the playing group needed to start showing that for the full 80 minutes.

"The onus is back on us to put those things into place at training and then in the game,” he said.
