World number two Ariya Jutanugarn took the lead after the first round with a six-under-par 65 in breezy conditions.
The Thai star, 20, is one shot ahead of South Korean pair Inbee Park - a seven-time major winner - and Seiyoung Kim.
World No.1, New Zealand's Lydia Ko, shot 69.
Lee, 20, was +1 following three bogeys in five holes around the turn but after she chipped in at 15 and birdied 17, she also had a four on the par-five 18th to end her day well.
"I finished strong so I'm happy with that one," the world No.17 said.
"I think I'm in a pretty good position going into tomorrow."
