Resources group creates spending guide for regional towns

IN A time of austerity for Queensland coal mines, a peak resources group has created a guide to help companies spend their funds in regional towns.

The Queensland Resources Council released the guide compiled with the help of Australian Industry Group and Australian Steel Institute, as well as resource firms.

QRC chief Michael Roche said it allowed companies to easily connect with regional suppliers.

It also built on earlier work developing a "local content code" that already encouraged firms to look to local suppliers first.

Ideally, it would drive competition between suppliers in these areas while ensuring companies helped bolster the areas in which they operate.

The focus on supporting local businesses follows 7000 Queensland mining jobs being lost in the past 15 months.

According to the QRC, in the 2011-12 financial year, Queensland's resources industry spent $20.5 billion on manufacturing, construction, transport and professional utilities.
