Rain spoils start of drag racing season

THIS weekend is a big one at Queensland Raceway, starting tonight with the popular Drifts.

Tomorrow will see the Madaz Burnouts take over before the day is finished off with Saturday Night Roll Racing after it was washed out last Saturday.

Sunday is a general practice followed by the opening round of the Ipswich Street Sprints.

The Street Sprints will have a good line up of cars being the first one for 2016.

The final Street Sprints in 2015 was won by Phil Sutcliffe in his Nissan GTR, with my favourite, the mighty Suzuki Swift of Daniel Harding in third position.

The 2016 drag racing season was halted with the weather last Saturday.

It was a real shame as so many people were hanging out for the start of the Street Series.

The season will now start with round one of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship on February 13.

We will all be hoping for no rain so we can finally get started for 2016.

The Willowbank Test and Tune on Wednesday night got underway before weather hit again.

The bike theme was great with so many different bikes turning out despite the threat of rain.

Wednesday night is the next Test and Tune night.

On February 12, the Lights Out Grudge Racing will include a special appearance by Jeff Lutz from the United States in his multi HOTROD Drag Week winning '57 Chev.

Then he will be at Powerplay for the one-day Powercruise at Queensland Raceway on February 14.

DJR Team Penske has its first test for the year on Monday.

It will be the first chance for new recruit Fabian Coulthard to try the Penske machinery.

It was the biggest move of the V8 Supercar off-season when Coulthard made the switch from BJR to DJR Team Penske and many believe he is a championship contender this year.

The test day will be crucial for him to settle in and become part of the team before the season opener at Clipsal 500.

I will be heading out to Queensland Raceway during my lunch break to check out a few laps.

With the wash out at both precinct venues last week, I'm hoping for good weather this weekend as I need my motorsport fix whilst I keep an eye on the television for the Bathurst 12-hour.

That's the life of Johnny Speed for you.
