'I'd work well with Newman'

THEY'VE been at loggerheads before but Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said he would have "no problem" working with Campbell Newman if he is elected Premier.

"I get along with all premiers," mayor Pisasale said yesterday.

"I made a decision a long time ago to support whatever premier has been democratically elected by the people."

Asked to be specific in terms of working with Mr Newman as Premier, Cr Pisasale said: "I'll have no problem working with Campbell."

"All I ask is for him to show respect for local government," he said.

In 2009 Ipswich City Council pulled out of the Council of Mayors, with mayor Pisasale fed up with Mr Newman, who was Brisbane Lord Mayor and Council of Mayors chairman.

He accused then Lord Mayor Newman of politicising the body and being Brisbane focused.

"Campbell Newman is the one on the airways saying it's political bull****, that it's 'Labor this and Labor that'," Cr Pisasale said.

"The Council of Mayors isn't all about Campbell Newman. When things get better we might be able to resurrect the thing," he said.

In February 2010 Ipswich rejoined the Council of Mayors after Cr Pisasale and Cr Newman smoked the peace pipe.
