Phil's shop a cut above the rest
PHIL Daly opened his successful barber shop 10 years ago this week.
The Raceview-based barber, Legends Barber Shop, is celebrating this milestone, opening his doors on December 3, and he cannot believe how fast the decade has past.
While he does not plan to make any big deal of the event, he is really proud of what has been achieved and pays tribute to his many loyal customers.
"I was tentative when I first opened the doors. The shop shut its doors under a previous owner just two months prior and people at least knew it was under new management," Mr Daly said.
From those early days a great deal has happened, but he is pleased with the growth of the barber shop.
Mr Daly is a self-confessed "sports fanatic" and that theme is very evident in the shop.
"I have photographs of sporting memorabilia and greats and it has grown a lot over the years. I swap around in the season changes," he said.
"I started my apprenticeship at Enoggera nine and a half years ago and worked both on and off the Army barracks there. It gave me good grounding and I got to know the defence jargon," he said.
An Ipswich boy through and through, he finds that his earlier training has not been lost since making the return home to set up this business.
"I do get a wide range of customers but I do get RAAF and Army personnel coming in and I know the regulations so they don't have to be concerned, in fact some remember me from those days," he said
"I can cater for the more traditional customer looking for high sides and back, usually the older customers, but I do get the young ones coming looking for different styles, from the Mohawk to other modern styles, I can cater for the whole range."
Mr Daly is actively involved in the community, through sponsorship.
He has or continues to support The Jets, Brothers juniors, Hancock Brother's Hockey, Ipswich Hockey and one year with West End Football.
He believes that it is important to support the local community through sponsorship.
A large number of local sporting people do come into the shop, Mr Daly recalled that in his Brisbane days he would serve a number of the Brisbane Bronco's but does not see this level of player so much today.
The Legends Barber Shop is at shop 7, Raceview Shopping Centre, Raceview St, Raceview, ( near the chemist).
He is open from 8.30am daily and closes 5 pm Tuesday and Friday, 6 pm Wednesday and Thursday and open Saturday from 8am to noon.
It is a bit of social gathering that takes place at Legends Barber Shop, men seem to like it.
