Old trains make tracks from local workshops to South Africa
A HEAVY load of aging locomotives was shipped out to Africa in a three-day logistical operation from the Redbank Railway Workshops.
The old engines were transported one by one to the Port of Brisbane in preparation for the trip across the Indian Ocean to their new home.
The last of the 95-tonne relics left the workshops yesterday morning under the watchful eyes of Aurizon staff.
The old engines were driven out from the workshops and positioned underneath two cranes.
Each locomotive was hoisted into the air by two 220-tonne capacity cranes.
The trains were held in the air for a couple of minutes while a semi-trailer was manoeuvred into place and the loco lowered onto a trailer which had 72 tyres to carry the immense weight.
It took only 15 minutes to move the loco from the warehouse onto the truck.
An Aurizon representative said the locos were sold to a South African company in a deal last year.
This week's shipment finalised the transaction.
The locos will be used to provide parts for the company's own fleet of trains.
"Aurizon is this week shipping 20 surplus locomotives from Redbank to South Africa following a similar shipment last year," the representative said.
"In March last year the company sold 39 surplus locomotives to an international broker, which specialises in surplus disposals, for use in South Africa following refurbishment.
"Six of those are included in the current shipment."
The shipment is being moved on the specially chartered heavy lift ship, the 'BBC Carolina', departing the Port of Brisbane later this week headed for Durban.
The shipment is expected to arrive in Durban in mid- September.
