Muppets Most Wanted: It’s a bit croak and dagger

THE Oscar-winning team of Brett McKenzie and James Bobin team up again in the new Muppets movie, Muppets Most Wanted.

Songwriter and Flight of the Conchords star McKenzie won an Oscar for his work on 2012's The Muppets movie, which breathed new life into the beloved puppet franchise.

Now he, director Bobin and the Muppets themselves are back for this European romp.

The film sees Muppets leader Kermit replaced by international criminal Constantine, who bears a striking resemblance to the banjo-playing frog, after Kermit is mistakenly arrested in Russia.

In this Q&A, Kermit tells APN about his latest adventure.

Q: It must have been exciting to take the whole Muppets crew overseas to Europe?

A: What with Animal's drumming, the Swedish Chef's cooking and Gonzo's feats of derring-do, we're a pretty exciting - and noisy and messy - group even when we stay at home. Going to Europe really added to the excitement, and the noise and the mess. But as Orson Welles once said: great movies come from a lot of excitement, noise and messiness. Or maybe I said that.

Q: But it must have also been very upsetting to be confused with an international criminal. How did you cope with being thrown in prison?

A: It's not easy being green... and behind bars. I was nervous and scared at first, but then I found out that, like everyone else, my fellow prisoners wanted to break into show business. So, I got along great with them. And, as Fozzie pointed out, it's great to have a captive audience.

Q: Did you have faith your Muppets friends would discover your absence and the impostor?

A: I always have faith in my friends. But at the same time Constantine is very good at being very bad. Will my friends save the day? Will Constantine take my place… forever? How many costume changes can Miss Piggy get through in a single scene? To answer these questions you're going to have to go see Muppets Most Wanted.

Q: Was it upsetting that Miss Piggy thought Constantine was you, even for a little while?

A: Oh yes, it was upsetting… especially for Constantine, who ends up walking down the aisle to marry Miss Piggy. I was a little jealous, too. It's not that I want to get married to Piggy, but I don't think marrying the world's number one criminal is a good way to live happily ever after.

Q: Any chance we'll be seeing you in a future James Bond film after your heroics in this film?

A: I'd love to. I'm not sure Hollywood is ready for a short green spy with flippers, but I am developing several secret agent-inspired movie ideas including Goldflipper, The Pig who Loved Me, Octopiggy and my personal favourite: Live and Let Croak.

Muppets Most Wanted is in cinemas now.
