Movie review: Iron Man 3

NOW this is how a superhero should be.

If I was forced to choose, I'd take Robert Downey Jr's wisecracking and charming Tony Stark over his superhero counterparts any day.

While the Iron Man franchise shows respect to the source material it is adapted with a playful, goofy tone, never taking itself nor is it hero too seriously.

Following on from last's year's kick-ass Avengers, here we have Stark recuperating in his billionaire's lair, plagued by insomnia, anxiety attacks and facing a potentially deadly villain who comes in the shape of The Madarin (portrayed by a brilliant Ben Kinsley in one of his best performances to date).

Director Shane Black of Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang fame has penned a razor sharp script which crackles with wit and killer one-liners delivered with machine-gun efficiency and perfect timing.

The series' villains have always been an issue with Iron Man's past advertises a little weak compared to his superhero comic book counterparts but here he finally gets a memorable villain whose story arc is handled beautifully.

Kingsely's shines in the role and delivers a dynamite performance that people will be talking about for years to come.

Downy Jr as Stark is his trademark narcissistic wisecracking charismatic self and injects the role with just the right combination of humour and heart.

Gwyneth Paltrow gives her strongest performance as Pepper Potts to date and looks smoking hot in the process, who knew she was rocking those abs underneath those designer gowns.

With Black at the helm this is the film Iron Man 2 should have been and if it's the last solo outing for Stark then it's a very strong finale.
