More than 10,000 insurance claims after Cyclone Marcia

MORE than 10,000 insurance claims have come out of Central Queensland since Tropical Cyclone Marcia battered the region in late February.

According to Suncorp Insurance, most of these have come from Yeppoon, Biloela and Rockhampton, the areas struck directly by the Category Five system.

Suncorp spokesman Joshua Cooney said 47% of customers were either back in their homes, had cars repaired or received payment after a claim.

"More than 3,500 home and motor repairs have been carried out, with a focus on repairing homes to cyclone standards," he said.

"this means that, provided residents take the proper safety precautions as storms approach, their home can be more cyclone resilient.

"Cyclone Marcia is a very recent example of the need to look seriously at how exposed many homes in northern Queensland are to cyclones.

"As part of our Protecting the North package, we are working with James Cook University to build a practical and cost-effective retrofit program to help customers strengthen their homes," he said.

Mr Cooney said Suncorp also had a focus on ensuring local trades and resources were used in the rebuild effort as much as possible.

"We're using local builders, repairers, suppliers and trades wherever possible because we know it can help accelerate the local economy which is an important part of the recovery for the wider community," he said.

Mr Cooney said recent storms and floods along the eastern seaboard have not affected repairs progress.

"Since the cyclone hit, we've used our scale and ramped up capacity to best meet customer demand.

"Our claims team and repairers have been working hard since February and will continue to do so until all our customers are back in their homes and their cars are repaired."
