Minister: hunger strike protestors 'irresponsible'
IMMIGRATION Minister Peter Dutton labelled Manus Island detainees protesting their detention as "irresponsible" after the government earlier denied reports of protests.
As many as 200 detainees reportedly went on a hunger strike at the weekend.
There were reports that some drank detergent in suicide attempts and others had barricaded themselves in separate compounds at the centre.
While the Immigration Department had denied reports of violence at the weekend, Mr Dutton on Monday admitted some detainees had engaged in "aggressive behaviour".
Many detainees have been held in the centre for two years or more.
The ABC reported some also offered to donate their organs to Australians if they died in detention.
Mr Dutton said other claims of withholding food and water from detainees were false, saying some chose a "disruptive path", rather than peaceful protest.
