Mateship lifts Ipswich women's club to double glory
IT'S not often a club has a perfect record in grand finals so Ipswich's spirited Vets had plenty to celebrate.
Both club teams involved in this year's Ipswich competition were rewarded with impressive victories.
The Vets A2 women beat Thistles 4-1 on Friday night before the club's R2 women continued the celebration with an 8-0 clean sweep over Thistles on Saturday morning.
R2 player of the final Cara Drummond was delighted to see her side finish the season so strongly.
"We've been up and down but we knew we had to win today and bring the heat, and we did,'' she said, enjoying a cool refreshment with her teammates.
Centre forward Drummond scored two goals in the game to collect her first player of the final award.
Winger Rachael Fitzgerald netted a hat-trick in the grand final. Vanessa Kissane was captain/coach of the R2 side.
"Most of us have been together for quite a few years but we had a couple of newcomers this year which really helped us out,'' Drummond said.
"We've been working hard. We've been consistent all year.
"We toiled hard to get here and knocked off the top team (Swifts) and came straight through to the grand final.
"It was just a great feeling to get out there and give everything we could and come away with the win.''
In her fifth year with Vets having won three of four grand finals with the club, Drummond said everyone was "one big family'', growing up together.
That's why it was so enjoyable having the club's A2 women winning the night before.
"There's only two teams in the club and we both made the grand final against the same club,'' she said.
"We play for each other. We go out and have fun. We don't take it too seriously.''
