‘Lovely’ young couple killed in horror highway crash

A "LOVELY" young couple who had been dating for just a few weeks have been tragically identified as the victims of a horror fatal crash near Babinda.

Bellenden Ker teen Lauren Quabba, 16, and partner Evan Fielder, 19, from Wongaling Beach, died when their car collided with another vehicle on the Bruce Highway about 7.30pm last night.

Ms Quabba was a Year 12 student at Babinda State School and Mr Fielder was a tennis coach with father Wayne's well-known Cassowary Coast business Baseline Tennis Coaching Academy.

Ms Quabba's second cousin Jessica Ridolfi said the school and wider Babinda community had been rocked by the tragedy.

"You hear about accidents all the time, but never think it will happen to your family," she said.

"I've pretty much watched her grow up.

"She was lovely girl.

"She'd just go up and give everyone hugs and she was always happy and cheerful.

"I think the school will be very hurt today.

"I think she was very close to a lot of the school kids there."

The driver of the other vehicle, a 17-year-old Townsville man, is in a stable condition in Cairns Hospital after being flown there by Rescue 510 helicopter with serious injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Police are appealing to any member of the community who may have witnessed the crash or has any further information to contact police.
