PM denies cutting school funding amid calls for Gonski

THE fight over education funding continued in Canberra yesterday when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull rejecting Labor's claims of cuts to funding.

In an answer in Question Time, Mr Turnbull said the budget had not been cut - there was a more than 20% boost over coming years.

The government has not guaranteed funding for the Gonski needs-based initiative out to 2018 but has kept increases locked in by Labor before the 2013 election.

Labor leader Bill Shorten promised the extra funding - $33 billion - a week ago but did not explain how Labor would pay for it.

Yesterday's dispute came as the Australian Education Union brought to Canberra indigenous students benefiting from the current funding boost, to lobby for the extra funds.

AEU federal president Correna Haythorpe said: "These schools need the Federal Government to commit to the full six years of Gonski funding to ensure that they get the full level of resources they need for their students."
