But many asked the question about the status of the Broken River swimming hole.

We can reveal it has not officially been closed, but water quality issues make it inadvisable to swim.

Further, it is now one of the best platypus viewing venues in Australia.

A Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said: "While the water quality discourages most people, some continue to swim and there are no regulations in place preventing people from doing so".

"QPWS asks people to avoid the water and instead use the platypus viewing platform, as the area is considered one of the best platypus viewing venues in Australia.

"While there was never any intention to prohibit swimming, it was important for the department to place warning signs alerting the public to the potential risk associated with swimming," they said.

The spokesperson said the Broken River Swimming Hole "was never closed" and it was a "very popular swimming location for many years".

" ... but concerns with the water quality in the mid-1990s resulted in a dramatic decline in activity," they said.

"River nutrient levels and associated pathogens naturally fluctuate due to a number of factors, including neighbouring land uses, recent rain events or droughts.

"Water testing identified that due to the nutrient levels and pathogens present the water was not fit for human contact, which is why warning signs were installed."

The spokesperson said the department had continued to test the water quality "and while there have been some improvement in the water quality, it is still considered unfit for swimming".
