Ipswichs vets secure promotion
HAVING to travel back to Ipswich, the newly-promoted veteran’s hockey victors didn’t have much time to celebrate in Rockhampton.
However, the achievement of Ipswich’s unbeaten Division 2 women’s team was satisfying enough.
By outclassing Gold Coast’s top side 3-0 in Monday’s final, Ipswich’s top veteran’s side secured promotion to Division 1 for next year’s state titles.
It was the first time the Ipswich women qualified for the highest level.
Having coached veteran teams for 13 years, Karen Harnden led the chorus of praise for what her team accomplished.
“It was a great effort. The girls just played awesome,” she said.
“When you have good players who are prepared to work together, it makes it so much easier.”
Captain Janet Peters was a standout and Brihony Simpson led the scoring with four goals from five games.
Lyn Grulke and Kerryn Bennett were chosen in the state over-45 team for the nationals in Perth.
Harnden said it was the “complete team effort” that lifted Ipswich into the higher ranks.
After beating Gold Coast (2) 1-0, Ipswich drew 1-1 with Rockhampton, downed Mackay 1-0 and overcame Maryborough 2-0.
Grand final opponents Gold Coast had spent three years trying to gain promotion. But Ipswich denied Gold Coast again as they produced a performance to cherish.
“They were so excited,” Harnden said of the Ipswich players.
“It was just the whole atmosphere.
“It was just a whole complete team effort. A lot of hard work went into it.”
