Ipswich side bracing for double football test
NEW Western Spirit head coach Matt Raub would have preferred to have played his team's first FFA Cup match before tomorrow night.
However, with the Capital League 2 season kicking off this weekend, Raub is keen to continue building his squad which has welcomed some new faces from last season.
Spirit tackles Virginia United away tomorrow in the rescheduled knockout competition clash before meeting Pine Hills away on Saturday night.
"The (FFA Cup) game has been changed three or four times so I'm not sure what we're going to be taking over there now,'' Raub said.
"I think it will be a mixture of 20s, Reserves and top side.''
Raub has taken over the head coaching role from Nick Paterson who has accepted an assistant's role with Taringa in this year's Capital League 1 competition.
Former midfielder/centre back Raub played for Spirit 10 years ago when Jim McCabe was coaching the Goodna-based top team.
Having coached at Brisbane Knights the past few seasons, sales rep Raub is eager to see what Spirit can achieve at its Kippen Park base and against CL2 rivals.
"Ideally like top four,'' Raub said, when asked what his main hopes were this season.
"We're not going too bad.
"We've had a few boys away at the moment but I think we'll be strong.''
He has welcomed back goalkeeper Chris Morrall, appointing centre midfielder Mauricio Arena the captain this season.
The team has been training Tuesday and Thursday nights since before Christmas.
FFA Cup preliminary round: Tuesday (7.15pm) - Western Spirit v Virginia United at Albert Bishop Park.
