Ipswich runner enjoys a swim after hat-trick win

ATHLETICS: Ipswich runner Glen Yarham returned to claim his third win in the half marathon at the 20th annual Townsville Running Festival on Sunday.

Yarham finished the 2018 half marathon in 1:11:21, ahead of Cairns' Nick Carling (1:18:42) and Jonathan Camilleri (1:19:51).

"This is my third time coming up for the Townsville Running Festival and I think every year it gets better and better,'' Yarham said.

"I love coming up here and getting out of the cold weather.

"I've won it twice before in 2014 (1:09:05) and 2016 (1:09:00).

"I want to run the Auckland Marathon in late October and only got back into running a few months ago, so everything I'm doing is building up to that and hopefully by then I'll be in peak form.''

Yarham's win in Townsville follows his recent victory in the Queensland 10km Road Racing Championships and another Ipswich Park2Park half marathon success last month.

Returning from a tibia stress fracture and time away from the sport, the Collingwood Park athlete also won recent events at Caloundra and in the Somerset region.

However, he found time to take a short break after his latest Townsville effort.

"Although I have a heavy training load at the moment, it's always good to come up here and relax a bit,'' he said.

"I went to Magnetic Island yesterday and had a swim. It's great to get away."
