Ipswich on display as Rangers host rugby sevens cup

WOODEND Park received a huge workout over the weekend.

The home ground of the Ipswich Rangers, the two fields have hosted an action-packed weekend of senior and junior rugby union.

On Saturday the Rangers welcomed Wynnum in both Barber and Pegg Cup competitions.

Unfortunately for the home teams it was Wynnum who walked away 47-5 victors in the Barber Cup, after taking out the Reserve Grade clash with a 24-7 win.

Despite the heavy rain over the weekend, Ipswich hosted a girls Rugby Sevens tournament yesterday.

"A touch of rain wasn't going to stop the girls from getting out there,” Ipswich Rangers president Jason Dutton boasted.

"There's heaps of games going on all over the place and everyone is really enjoying themselves.

"Unfortunately we don't have any Ipswich teams competing this weekend but it's a great opportunity for us to host a tournament like this and hopefully promote women's rugby union.”

With teams from across Brisbane and Logan competing, Dutton said he hopes Ipswich can welcome a women's outfit into the Rangers fold in time for the 2018 season.

"It's definitely something we've been looking at doing for a while,” he said.

"We've got our birthday celebrations next year which would be a great time to do it.”

The Goodna Gladiators return from the bye this weekend against Caboolture, with Ipswich having a bye.
