Ipswich derby deserves a trophy

WALTER Seapule would like to see some silverware on offer when the Goodna Gladiators and Ipswich Rangers face off in a local derby this weekend.

The two Ipswich sides meet three times throughout the season and the Goodna coach believes there should be a trophy on offer for the winning outfit.

"I think it would be nice if there was a trophy between the two sides,” Seapule said.

"Even when we had the Springfield Hawks up in the same competition there could have been one between the three clubs.

"Saturday was the biggest crowd we've had for a long time and this weekend will be even bigger. It would be good for grassroots rugby to have something like that on offer.”

The Gladiators are the current Ipswich champions after defeating the Rangers in their round one encounter at Woodend Park.

Expecting another battle of chess against his former teammate Tino Anae, Seapule said he'll take multiple plans into tomorrow's contest.

"Tino is very clued in when it comes to his rugby,” he said. "He's very smart and he knows what he is talking about.

"When we played at the start of the season I could tell that he had pulled out some tricks to block some of the things I was doing.

"We'll have to wait and see what they have this weekend but I'm sure Tino will have some more tricks up his sleeve.”

Seapule expects the biggest challenge to come from the Rangers forwards.

To counter the move, the Gladiators have been perfecting their ruck at training and will rely on their experience backs to turn the tide.
