If you take drugs and drive you’ll be caught

"IF police don't catch people with the drugs on them, then they will catch them with the drugs in them".

That was the message from Ipswich Magistrate Deborah Vasta, when a motorist appeared before her in relation to a drug-driving charge.

The driver, Simon James Hulin used cannabis about 18 hours before getting behind the wheel.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Rose Molinaro said Hulin was pulled over by police in Booval about 8.50pm on September 20.

A test for drugs showed Hulin had Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol - the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects - in his saliva.

Hulin told the court that although he used cannabis he was not under the influence of the drug when he got behind the wheel.

Ms Vasta told the 29-year-old that the drug could stay in people's systems for up to eight weeks.

The magistrate said she believed the crackdown on drug-driving was a means of deterring people from using drugs.

She said that if police didn't catch people with the drugs on them, then they would catch them with the drugs in them.

"So if you are driving and it's still in your system, it's still an offence," she said.

Evans told the court he had "cut down" on his drug use since getting busted by police.

He was fined $100 and disqualified from driving for a month.
