Home-based business is a cut above

ROBERT and Elle Farmer are celebrating 20 years of owning and operating Rob-Elle Hair Designers.

Hairdressing is a significant part of their lives and this milestone is a tribute to their dedication and professionalism to their craft. July this year marked the two decades of hairdressing in Ipswich.

Rob-Elle Hair Designers started in Downs St, North Ipswich.

"The salon was opened by Georgie Conway (former Ipswich City councillor) and one of my first clients was Paul Pisasale who I remember came into the shop with two meat pies and said that one was for him and one was for me and he wanted a haircut. He was only the councillor for Brassall at the time," Mr Farmer said.

After several years at North Ipswich the couple decided to move the business into a home-based structure.

"We have five children and we wanted to find a place that could accommodate us and the business. We are still there today," Mr Farmer said.

The 24 Lauriston St salon is established in a stand-alone former 70sq m rumpus room, which has been converted into a warm and welcoming space and continues to be popular with their loyal customer base.

"We had tremendous support from then mayor John Nugent as we set up the home-based business that we still occupy. It has been a good decision especially when the children were younger they were very close by," he said.

Mr and Mrs Farmer are very proud to still offer services to a number of clients who started out with them 20 years ago. Hairdressing is in their blood, especially for Mrs Farmer whose mother and sisters have been in the industry.

The husband and wife duo over the years have had salons out west including Pittsworth and Goondiwindi, living at the time in Pittsworth, and then in Toowoomba and Dalby residing in Toowoomba.

"I did my apprenticeship with Ross Adams who came third in the world for hairdressing and it was a time when the top-line hairdressers who knew each other like Gary Sawyer and Jon Le Court," Mr Farmer said.

The Farmers came to Ipswich to be in a more stable environment and be in a place they felt would be good for the children to grow up in.

The west was good to them but the seasonal conditions meant times were often uncertain.

"I have won many awards for hairdressing including representing Queensland in the Master Hairdressers at a national level and winning Australian Championships.

"I have judged many hairdressing competitions and I love to pass this knowledge on to our staff," he said.

Apart from the Farmers, Lisa Moore has been with them for a number of years and Lauren Ziedler, a beauty therapist, brings additional services to the salon.

"I want to say that Ellie and Lisa are the best up-styler's that I know, they are so accomplished. They are also up there with the best when it comes to colourists.

"I have worked with the best in Australia and these two are fantastic," Mr Farmer said.
