Hat-trick gives Spirit timely boost

WESTERN Spirit's attacking recruit Tom Webster highlighted his early value by scoring a hat-trick in his team's latest Capital League 1 victory.

Former Moggill player Webster led the goal scoring effort, with Lachlan Jackson also netting twice as Spirit beat Park Ridge 5-2 at Kippen Park on Saturday night.

It was Spirit's second top grade win of the season with a catch-up local derby against Ipswich City still to be played.

After his Reserve Grade team remained unbeaten with a 4-1 win, coach Chris Morrall was keen to see the top side display more commitment, especially to training.

"We've still got a lot of defensive work to do,'' Morrall said.

"We seem to be pretty good going forward. We're scoring at least three goals a game, which is a complete turnaround from last year.''

After Spirit bowed out of the FFA Cup competition through the week, Morrall was concerned about two of the top team's key backline players.

Shane Carr and Chris Gayle pulled up sore and could be in doubt for Spirit's next match against Annerley at Kippen Park on Friday night.

While the Spirit teams are settling into the new season, the Ipswich Knights are continuing to do it tough.

The Football Queensland Premier League club's top team lost 6-0 to Logan on Saturday night.

The Knights face an even tougher assignment against competition leaders Peninsula Power at Bundamba on Sunday.
