Growing with oil and gas boom
SAXON Energy Services Australia continues to grow from its humble beginnings as a three-rig operation in South Australia's Cooper Basin.
A division of international oilfield services company Saxon Energy Services, the Australian arm is expanding in Queensland's Surat Basin, with plans to run more than a dozen rigs across the region.
The company is one of a growing number choosing to operate out of Toowoomba, as the city capitalises on its proximity to the oil and gas fields of the Surat Basin.
Daniel Marcano, Country Manager, took the time to catch up with MyCareer, and talk about Saxon's recruitment plans for 2012.
How the current activity in the sector impacted on your recruitment?
The general skills shortage is evident across most roles.
As the industry is somewhat infantile in Australia there is a shortage of experienced personnel including tourpushers, drillers, assistant drillers, derrickhands, motorhands and floorhands.
Does Saxon prefer to hire fully-skilled staff, or are you willing to take on less skilled employees and train them to suit?
We take a combination of both.
We have a very strong focus on career development supported by robust training programs.
All new staff commence with three weeks of solid training and more experienced personnel are supported to complete their Certificates in Drilling Oil and Gas and IWCF driller accreditation.
Which roles do you find most difficult to fill?
Day and night tourpushers, drillers and assistant drillers.
These oil and gas specific skills are in short supply and we are having to look at international candidates to fill these roles in the short term.
Our long term strategy is to develop and promote Australians into these roles after being coached by our international employees.
What vacancies are you currently trying to fill?
We have a number of vacancies at all levels.
We are actively seeking all rig positions plus supporting functions in supply chain and procurement, HR and mobilisation.
Safety is a core value and we are seeking leaders such as rig managers supported by rig safety training coordinators to ensure our safety culture is adhered continuously.
What training and development pathways do you offer staff?
All new employees have an individual training plan developed based on their needs.
Competency based assessment on the job by our Rig Safety Training Coordinators ensure our employees are recognised and promoted within.
For our drillers it is mandatory to hold a Cert IV Drilling - (Onshore Oil and Gas) and Rig Managers a Diploma in Drilling (Onshore Oil and Gas).
Drillers also require and we provide Drilling Fundaments IWCF. Saxon is committed to ongoing personal development and offering tangible career paths.
What does the company have planned for 2012?
Saxon will continue to grow its operations in Australia with six rigs in the country and a further seven additional rigs arriving through to November. Our values, safety, teamwork, respect, integrity, value and empowerment , summarized in the word STRIVE, will guide us to ensure we achieve our goals.
