Govers double helps Kookaburras down Black Sticks

HOCKEY: The Kookaburras have continued their unbeaten start to the International Festival of Hockey with a 3-1 defeat of New Zealand.

A day after beating India 3-2 to open the four-nation tournament in Melbourne, the Australian men's team downed the Black Sticks thanks to a goal from Aaron Kleinschmidt and a double to Kieran Govers.

Kookaburras interim head coach Paul Gaudoin was happy with the result.

"It was pleasing to get the win today,” he said. "The Black Sticks started well but we fought back at the end of the first quarter and into the second. It was some fantastic hockey and quality play.

"We lost our way a little bit after half-time and maybe relaxed, which let them back into the game. We need to make sure that against Malaysia we get 60 minutes of quality play, not perhaps 35 minutes.”

In Thursday's other game, India defeated Malaysia 4-2.

The men's tournament continues on Saturday with Australia to face Malaysia and New Zealand taking on India, before the finals on Sunday.

The Hockeyroos, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from a shock series-opening defeat to India when they clash again on Friday.

The world No.12-ranked Indians secured a 1-0 win against the No.4-ranked Hockeyroos on Wednesday.

The two sides will meet for a third and final time on Sunday.
