Goodna team ready for premier test

THE Goodna Sapphires launch their historic Queensland Premier League netball season on Thursday night at the State Netball Centre.

The newly-formed Sapphires team play Qld Catholic Netball Association (QCCNA) at 9.30pm.

Captain Robyn Walsh said the team backed by the Goodna Netball Association was ready to contest the restructured state competition.

Angela Ray is the only player out with a back injury. "But she is receiving treatment and will be back for the second round,'' Walsh said.

As part of their final preparations, the Sapphires had a training run against a Tier 1 team, winning 42-26.

"So we are confident going into game one,'' she said. "It took a little while for us to adjust to the size of the court, but other than that the team came together really well.''

The Goodna Sapphires team: Robyn Walsh (captain), Angela Ray, Renae Kalalo, Rebecca Asquith, Nicole Theron, Beth Hay, Sarah Cullen-Reid, Chrissy Peever, Aviva Collins, Samah Collins. Coach: David Eustace. Assistant coach: Helena Nancarow. Manager: Lauren Lavea.
