Gatton's big effort rewarded
GATTON Hawks A Grade co-coach Michael Armstrong praised his side's commitment in their 22-20 TRL victory over Highfields.
"The effort from the boys was very good,'' Armstrong said.
"Our effort was good last week. We just slacked off for a period there which we didn't against the Eagles.''
The Hawks' goal-line defence Mark Swan, Dom Haak and Robbie Fletcher helped keep the Eagles at low altitude.
As the side trailed 14-12 at halftime, the advice from coaching staff was "there should be no excuses".
Two tries from the away side in the opening three minutes, through Callum Woolacott and Riley Godwin, put the Hawks in front 22-14.
A try from the Eagles in the ninth minute took the score to 22-20.
The Hawks are now fifth on the TRL ladder.
Gatton's Reserve Grade side are happy with their performance despite their 14-12 loss on Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks were down 10-6 at the break.
An early second half try from Todd Bichel and conversion from Cory Schmidt put the Hawks in the lead 12-10.
With 13 seconds left on the clock, the Eagles scored to clinch victory.
The side is second on the TRL ladder.
Cory Schmidt, Todd Bichel and Will McCarthy were strong performers for the Hawks.
Hawks' under 18 coach Josh Belz said his side's performance was a "tough one to take" after their 32-10 loss against Highfields.
The Young Hawks were in good spirit going into the halftime break with a 10-nil lead. However "too much drop ball and forgetting the game plan in the second half" contributed to his side's defeat.
Ball control and learning when to switch on and off will be part of this week's training.
The under 18s hope to grab their second victory of the season against seventh-placed Pittsworth Danes on April 22.
The Hawks will host home games that day.
