Fernvale the centre on new Brisbane Valley junior club

MOVES to establish a new junior Aussie rules club in Fernvale are ramping up with a community meeting planned later this month.

The noon meeting is set down for Saturday, April 16, at the Fernvale State School assembly hall.

Chairman of the steering group is Graham Smith, who is hopeful a new junior Aussie rules club can be based in Fernvale.

The club would be called the Brisbane Valley Rattlers Junior Australian Rules Club, in line with the region's successful Rail Trail history.

"We aim to reach out for junior players from Warrego Highway to Esk,'' Smith said.

"There is no AFL at Esk at the moment and we are covering every town in between.

"It's a brand new market and as long as we market it right, we'll get the parents to come on board to assist.

"This will be the first Aussie Rules club formed in this area and it's an exciting opportunity to be part of a new club.''

Smith said the Somerset Council had shown tremendous support for multiple sports, building a new complex at Fernvale.

"This is a great opportunity to get a junior AFL club up and running,'' Smith said. "There's an AFL ground which conforms with senior AFL, as well as cricket, netball, rugby and soccer fields.''

Smith said the plan was to have the new junior Aussie rules club operational for the 2017 season.

He said teams were being sought from under 6 to under 11, with the hope of having at least a couple of girls teams from under 8-11 if enough players register.

All age groups will play a modified game.

"The furthest parents will have to travel in the first season will be to Fassifern, but most of our games will be in Ipswich, Collingwood Park, Springfield, Kalbar Showgrounds and Fernvale,'' Smith said.

Smith is also excited about a Community Ozkick program planned later this year, to be run by AFL Queensland.
