Funding for multi-purpose sports complex locked in: Choat
FERNVALE resident and keen sportswoman Elly Schmidt has welcomed the $1.6 million in funding for a new multi-purpose sports complex in the town.
The funding, half provided by Somerset Regional Council and half from the State Government's "Get in the Game, Get Playing Plus" fund, will provide a home for rugby league, soccer, Australian Rules football, cricket and netball.
Ipswich West MP Sean Choat said the money for the project was not dependent on any candidate being returned in the seat after the election and was "locked in".
Ms Schmidt, who plays sports, said the facility was "a great opportunity for Fernvale and the local community to get involved" in healthy activities.
"We don't have anything like that," she said.
"They are putting different sports into the facility, which will be good for everyon. It is quite a sporty community."
The grounds will be located on a site near Brouff Rd and the Brisbane Valley Hwy and will include toilets, change rooms, a bus drop-off and car park and road infrastructure.
Mr Choat said Fernvale was a fast-growing area.
"There are not a lot of sporting facilities there and I am very keen to get as many people involved in sport, particularly young people."
