Draft options for Inland Rail floodplain coming 'shortly'
AUSTRALIAN Rail Track Corporation has modelled a draft solution for the Inland Rail's crossing of the Condamine Floodplain, but is not yet ready to make it public, according to chair of the Southern Darling Downs Community Consultative Committee Graham Clapham.
Mr Clapham said ARTC addressed a SDCCC meeting in Yelarbon on Wednesday where officers gave a presentation about the "calibration" of their hydrological model, and "how the work that's been done has basically satisfied the model... and that the model is able to replicate current reality".
"They have told us they have actually modelled their solution to the floodplain crossing but until such time as they've refined that and gone and talked about the outcomes of that with the affected people, they're not prepared to make it public," he said.
"There's a general acceptance that we're starting from the right place.
"If the (hydrological) model is not reflective of reality, then you can't hope to get anything useful out of it when we talk about the solutions they put forward for the crossing of the floodplain."
A draft engineering solution for the Inland Rail's crossing of the Condamine Floodplain was fast-tracked late last year, after it was revealed in a Senate Estimates inquiry that no detailed design work had been done on the line's crossing of the 12.5km floodplain, exposing it to a potential cost blow-out.
Mr Clapham said at Wednesday's meeting members of the public raised similar concerns about other waterway and floodplain crossings along the Inland Rail route.
"People who weren't on the Condamine Floodplain were a little bit concerned that other water flow issues were going to be overlooked. There was an assurance given that wouldn't be the case."
