Dami ignores hype despite being favourite to win X Factor

FANS, commentators and bookies alike are all expecting Dami Im to win The X Factor.

But the South Korean-born dynamo isn't paying attention to the hype before tonight's grand final show.

"If I start thinking about what people are saying, even if it's something so good like that, then it's not helpful for me," she told APN.

"I get too much pressure, I lose focus on my performance. I try not to think about what anybody says, positive or negative, and just focus on my show."

The 24-year-old from Daisy Hill, in Brisbane's south, said she felt like an only child, as mentor Dannii Minogue's only remaining singer in the live shows for more than a month.

"I get all the love from her," Im said. "She's been spoiling me with so many good things - she gives me presents.

"When it was my birthday she got me lovely pyjamas and invited me over to her house. We've also had dinner here (in Sydney).

"She's like a really good friend now, like a sister."

Im's touching rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water, dedicated to Minogue after a death in her family, gave viewers an insight into their close bond.

It's also the best example of the type of music Im hopes to write and record after the show.

"I want to write my own songs and hopefully make songs that really uplift people and help people be positive," she said.

"When I sang Bridge Over Troubled Water I felt like that was my type of message. It's such a great feeling when I sing - I feel like it can help people feel better. People are out there having tough challenges in their lives and at least I can use my voice to help them in some kind of way."

Im credits her faith - she is a member of the Brisbane Full Gospel Church - with helping her stay grounded amid her newfound fame and the pressures of performing on live TV in front of millions of viewers.

The X Factor grand final shows air tonight at 6.30pm and tomorrow at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
