COMMENT: Knowledge is power over pollies
MUCH has been made of the links between local politicians and property developers in recent years, and it is no surprise to see that a ban on developer donations is among the CCC recommendations.
I suppose the next obvious question you might ask then would be; why stop at property developers?
Surely developers aren't the only type of business person who can lord it over a successful council candidate on the basis that their pile of money helped their man or woman get elected?
The important aspect of Operation Belcarra, as far as I can see, is that it lays a foundation for more open and honest reporting of who is backing whom when it comes to local elections.
So whether it's a multimillionaire businessman, a political party or even a local sporting club backing a candidate, at least Joe Public has the ability to know about it, should he care enough to look it up.
