Christian lobby accused of targeting private school parents
The Australian Christian Lobby has been accused of scaremongering about transgender children and targeting parents from Xavier College.
The prestigious Catholic boys' school in Kew told parents this week a student with a female identity would continue to study year 12 on campus.
The move follows widespread acceptance of transgender and gender fluid children at other schools, including single-sex Christian schools.
Residents in Kew received a leaflet in their letterbox two days after news reports about the Xavier student. The leaflet warns they could go to jail under new laws for encouraging children to "wait until they are older before pursuing potentially irreversible therapies".
It also notes parents "could be criminally prosecuted from seeking a second opinion interstate" and that their neighbour "could dob you in for having the 'wrong' conversation with your own kids".
The pamphlet is attributed to the Australian Christian Lobby - a conservative Christian group - and authorised by staffer Jasmine Yuen. It is referring to a new Victorian law that bans LGBTIQ+ conversion practices and includes penalties of up to ten years in jail or a fine of $10,000.
But the law also does not make any changes about the rights of parents in relation to children questioning their gender identity. The law also does not ban psychological counselling for children with gender dysphoria, the state government has said.
One Xavier parent who saw the leaflet said she "drew the connection immediately".
"Apart from being factually incorrect, it's disturbing and disgusting," she said.
"The impact on trans kids in households who believe this rubbish will definitely increase suicidal ideation in these kids.
"There is research to prove that trans kids who aren't supported by parents are far more likely to suicide," the parent said.
"The ACL should be ashamed of themselves. Accepting trans kids is being Christian. Not accepting them is un-Christian."
The leaflet also claims the "latest research shows that more than 80 per cent of gender dysphoric children desist after puberty". The research is attributed to frontiers.org which is a body which seeks to convert Muslims to Christianity.
It also notes that "professional therapists are now prohibited from discouraging a minor from undergoing a gender transition" but the government has also denied this is the case.
