Child allegedly injured badly by 79-year-old drink driver

A TEENAGE boy has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after allegedly being hit by an elderly man accused of driving while more than two times the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police said the child was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with head injuries after he was hit by a car at a busy Surfers Paradise intersection at about 9.15pm last night.

Police said the car was travelling north on Ferny Ave when it hit the 16-year-old, who was on the edge of the road at the intersection with Cavill Ave according to initial investigations.

The 79-year-old was breath tested and later allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.117 at the Surfers Paradise Police Station.

Police served the Victorian man a notice to appear for middle-range drink driving.

He is due to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on March 20.
