Champion Wests team to focus on what they do best

WESTS coach Brent Nicholls believes an extra-time defeat to Hancocks in the qualifying final a fortnight ago was a blessing.

"If anything, the loss in the major semi was a big wake-up call,'' the multiple premiership-winning mentor said.

"And it's just a matter of focusing on what we can control.

"The key for us will be just focusing on the things that we do well.''

After some terrific battles with Hancocks this season, Nicholls said it was pleasing his women's A-Grade team secured another grand final appearance.

However, with the firepower in both sides contesting Saturday's 5pm A-Grade grand final, Nicholls expects a quality attacking duel.

"We have the ability to score goals, as do Hancocks, but if we can take our opportunities, we're always going to be dangerous,'' he said.

"However, Hancocks do defend very physically so that's just something we're going to have to get our head around in order to find a way to combat that.''

Nicholls expects to field a full-strength side in the final, led by A-Grade player of the year Eden Jackat and co-captain Amy Nicholls.

A majority of the Wests players are backing up from last year's grand final success.

New A-Grade players this season have been former Reserve Graders Emma Picton and Jemma Payne.

He rotated his players well to cover multiple positions in last Sunday night's 6-2 preliminary final win over Swifts.

"It's just a matter of finding the right balance,'' he said.

"We really worked hard on trying to put lot of pressure on Swifts' back four and we won't be doing anything different his week.''

Nicholls praised Swifts young goalkeeper Hayley Petersen for a sensational effort last weekend.

However, this week has been all about getting his side switched on again.

"Finals can turn quickly. You have got to be ready to go,'' he said.

"We can't afford not to be prepared to play this week.''
