Call for new sports doping inquiry

AN INDEPENDENT senator will push for a Senate inquiry into the Essendon Football Club saga when parliament resumes next month.

Senator John Madigan said he would seek wider support for an inquiry into the doping allegations that have swirled around more than 30 of the club's players. He said the problems of performance-enhancing drugs at the club had been "a dog's breakfast from day one" and questions remained about doping regulations.

"A Senate inquiry is entirely appropriate to try to unravel the onion-layers of complexity surrounding this case," he said.

"Certainly we need standards and a strict regime to counter drugs in sport. The use of illegal supplements is never acceptable but the way this issue has been handled raises deep questions about our national game and how it is administered."
