Bush cooking: How to make a camp oven pizza

Everyone loves pizza; it's a favourite in our family.

So here we have a quick and easy recipe to bring that tasty gourmet delight to your next camping trip.

All you need is a handful of ingredients, a good fire with some coals and your trusty old camp oven. Let's get into it.



  • 500g Laucke Pizza/Focaccia Flour Mix
  • 4g Yeast
  • 330ml Lukewarm Water

  • 600g shredded pizza cheese
  • 200g pizza sauce
  • 200g smokey bbq sauce
  • Punnet cherry tomatoes
  • ½ sliced red onion
  • ¼ shredded barbecue chicken
  • 200g diced bacon
  • 100g pitted kalamata olives
  • ½ red capsicum sliced
  • 250g tub mini bocconcini
  • 150g sliced button mushrooms
  • 200g sliced ham
  • ½ bunch fresh basil
  • Makes 2 x pizzas in 4.5 quart camp oven, enough to feed 6-8 people

Making the pizza base

  1. Combine 400g of Pizza flour mix, 4g of yeast and 330ml of lukewarm water in a bowl.
  2. Mix together to form a dough, lightly flour a smooth surface and knead the dough until smooth and elastic. A transparent window should form in the centre when stretched.

  1. Divide the dough in half & lightly dust with flour from the remainder 100g of flour.  Place dough in a bowl and cover with Cling Wrap. Leave the dough to rest for approximately 20 minutes or when it's almost doubled in size.
  2. Whilst you are resting the dough, prepare your choice of toppings.

  3. Place your empty camp oven with lid on next to the hot coals to heat up while you roll out your dough on a lightly floured surface to approximately 1cm thickness or to evenly cover the surface of your camp oven.
  4. Lightly grease your camp oven and place pizza dough inside to cover the base. Using a fork, prick the dough base numerous times to create air pockets.
  5. Cover the camp oven with the lid and place onto the hot coals. Cook the pizza base first for 5-10mins (no toppings). Remove the camp oven from the coals and start creating your pizza!

Adding the good stuff

  1. Spread pizza sauce over base with the back of a spoon, add cheese and your favourite toppings. Our pizza was BBQ Chicken so we also added lashings of Smokey BBQ sauce throughout the ingredients. Make sure when you add the toppings you add them evenly across the entire base and don't forget to add a little more cheese on top right at the end.
  2. Replace your camp oven lid and place back onto the hot coals. Throw some hot coals on top of the lid for an all-over heat.
  3. Cook for a further 15-20 minutes depending on how much ingredients you've added - or until the top layer of cheese has melted.

Top Tips

  • The dough needs to be well rested for easier and pliable handling.
  • If you don't have a rolling pin with you, use a roll of cling wrap dusted with flour.
  • To do this by hand - mould the dough into a round shape by stretching, pulling & pressing with your fingers. Pricking or 'gocking' after rolling the dough will prevent excess lifting in a thick dough once it's cooking in the camp oven.
